Family visit, and a surprising revelation
My family came down to Singapore 2 weeks ago, and I brought them around Singapore, including my workplace and the zoo....since they come down so much I always have a problem deciding where to bring them that they've not been before...hmm I guess that's the problem with being in Singapore as opposed to the UK, where it's easy to find somewhere new to go, either within the country or to Europe.....ah well......took pics but I've been too lazy to upload the pics onto my comp till now...haha...
The entrance to Biopolis, my workplace! that's my mum in the photo...my building is the furthest one in the photo, all the way down the road....and each building is shaped like one of the blocks of that funny colourful man-shaped thing...my building 'Proteos' is the purple shaped block...
Mum, bro, sis and baby sis....this is the central garden of Biopolis, which I think they're trying to make into a cool chill out area....in actual fact not too many ppl sit around the tree during the day, since it's so freaking hot....
And yup my baby sis is YOUNG....9 years old...considering i'm 24, it IS a huge gap...haha....and since she's the baby she's spoiled by everyone...on top of that consider the fact that her favourite cartoon is Crayon Shin Chan....but apparently her grades are excellent, so my mum forgives her...haha....
Here's a close up of the little monster...haha my mum says she looks exactly like I did when I was her age....
Yeah I know some of you are saying 'Oh no"....fff...
Brought them to the zoo, which I haven't been to in 5 years!! Too bad Sarah wasn't there, else was hoping we could get back stage passes to the exhibits...haha....and scare my sis with the snakes....
Here's a disgusting exhibit...the zoo apparently thought it a good idea to have a cage of cockroaches....haha every single tourist who passed by cringed....it scared more ppl than I think the lions, scorpions and snakes....
And as I was playing with my sister, I noticed one thing....before this she always wrote with her left hand, but this time round she was writing with her right....I thought this was weird and asked my mum, and apparently my mum has been trying to correct her, by lightly smacking her hand when my sis writes using her left hand....
Out-dated beliefs huh? Guess what....apparently she did the same with me! I was a leftie!! Kinda weird to find out that out....haha a little unsettling....kept thinking of Joel's "Famous lefties and me!" T-shirt....
And today I was reading this article in Scientific American, which talked about lefties who were forced to convert, ie my sister and I:
"Some psychologists think that when a left-handedchild is forced to do everything with the right hand, the brain’s balance of power can become confused. The dominant right hemisphere is relegated to a more subservient role, while the left hemisphere becomes overburdened. As a result, communication between the two halves also suffers; information transfer through the corpus callosum, which connects the two hemispheres, breaks down. The same psychologists claim that this situation canpotentially compromise memory and concentration, not to mention disturb the language function. Some studies indicate that children who have been forced to switch are more likely to experience speech or reading and writing disorders. They also run the risk of suffering from inferiority complexes."
Hmmm I don't think I have a reading or writing disorder, though I sometimes think I could speak better...and do I have an inferiority complex? Haha I've asked some ppl and met with emphatic NOs, but just wondering if my ego would be bigger if I was left-handed right now....
